Sex Offenders Registry
Sexual offences often attract prison time and many offences require registration on the Sex Offenders Registry. Other offences may not have mandatory registration, but the Crown Prosecutor may ask the judge to make an order requiring registration. The Sex Offenders Registry is used by police and certain other approved organizations to investigate sexual offences and monitor sex offenders.
The Sex Offender Information Registration Act, commonly abbreviated to SOIRA, requires yearly registration on the Sex Offenders Registry. Those required to register must provide police with a large volume of personal information, including their employer, address, vehicle descriptions with license plate, and volunteering or educational institution if applicable. There is also a requirement to notify police if the person on the registry will be away from the residence registered with police, such as going on vacation.
