Manslaughter Charges

Edmonton Criminal Lawyer Ziv > Serious Offences > Manslaughter Charges

Manslaughter is one of the most serious offences in Canada, second only to murder. Manslaughter, like murder, is a type of “culpable homicide”. While the differences between manslaughter and murder may be difficult to discern, manslaughter can be understood as a wrong doing which has resulted in the death of another person without the intention to kill or cause significant bodily harm to the deceased.

Manslaughter is also what is known as an “included offence” to murder. This means that someone who has been charged with murder, may be convicted of manslaughter instead.

If you believe you are at risk of being charged with manslaughter, it is extremely important to contact experienced defence counsel right away. Mr. Y Rory Ziv has extensive experience defending serious offences, including murder, attempted murder and manslaughter.

When You Are First Charged

Given the seriousness of the offence of manslaughter, if charged, you will be held in custody upon arrest. While you will be entitled to a Bail Hearing, there are many obstacles to release. If you are denied bail, you will be held until your trial.

It is extremely important to retain legal counsel who has experience with manslaughter cases. Mr. Ziv can make substantial submissions to the Court on your behalf during a Bail Hearing. Our offices can be reached at 780-686-7948.

Sentencing

Potential sentences for manslaughter convictions are vary fact dependent. Unlike convictions for murder, life imprisonment is not the required sentence, although it is a possibility. Whether or not a firearm was used in the commission of the offence will also influence sentencing.

If you believe you may be charged with manslaughter, or your loved one has already been charged, our offices can be reached at 780-686-7948 to arrange a consultation.
